Building on Dr. Poston's Legacy of Leadership and Service

| |

I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare, but the COVID shutdowns were the catalyst for me to pursue a career in optometry. During that uncertain time, an optometric practice took a chance on me and hired me. That opportunity turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as I quickly fell in love with optometry and realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life serving others through eye care—and I’ve never looked back.

My education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry has been full of growth and meaningful opportunities to serve. Service has always been an integral part of my life, and I’ve intentionally woven that principle into every chance I’ve had to lead and grow within the optometric community. I’ve served as president of both the Private Practice Club and the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists, which deepened my understanding of the business side of optometry and helped me build lasting connections with mentors and peers. I’ve also been actively involved in the National Optometric Student Association (NOSA), attending conferences that offered invaluable support—especially by creating space to see others who looked like me thriving in this field.

Through these leadership experiences, I became increasingly connected with VSP, and their presence throughout my time at optometry school has made a real difference. From travel grants and scholarships to mentorship opportunities, VSP has shown up for students like me in tangible and encouraging ways. Even something as simple as a congratulatory email reminded me: “Malia, you can graduate. You belong here.” Those small moments built my confidence and kept me moving forward.

It was through NOSA and VSP’s outreach that I first learned about the Dr. Marvin R. Poston Leadership Award—a $4,000 scholarship recognizing five optometry students who demonstrate leadership, service, and a commitment to private practice. As a trailblazing Black optometrist and VSP co-founder, Dr. Poston opened doors for students like me, and his legacy is one I aspire to honor throughout my career. Receiving the Dr. Marvin R. Postin Scholarship made me feel truly seen.

Receiving this scholarship made me feel truly seen. It affirmed that others believe in my mission to expand access to quality eye care in underserved communities. Now, as I prepare for graduation in May 2026, I feel empowered and ready to take the next step.

Giving Back Through Private Practice
Looking ahead, I hope one day to establish my own private practice in eastern Alabama and serve a community where access to quality eye care is limited. My guiding principle is simple: never turn down a patient. As Eye See It, Doctors of Optometry have a vital role in the health and well-being of their communities. No matter how long the day is, I’ll always ensure that my patients receive the care they need.
