A Clearer Vision of Purpose: Why I Chose to Serve with VSP Eyes of Hope

| |

When I chose optometry, I wasn’t just choosing a career—I was choosing a calling rooted in care, connection, and community. Today, I’m proud to serve as an optometrist in private practice, while also pursuing my passion as a healthcare content creator. The flexibility of private practice has given me the space to show up more intentionally for my patients, my platform, and now, initiatives that align deeply with my values—like VSP Eyes of Hope.

My relationship with VSP began like many doctors: as a provider. But over the years, that relationship has grown into something much deeper. I’ve partnered with VSP on educational campaigns—like being featured in articles highlighting the importance of detecting diabetic retinopathy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and sharing clinical insights as a guest on Ask An Eye Doc. VSP has consistently supported my growth as a provider and a voice in the profession. Now, through initiatives like Eyes of Hope, they’re making it easier for doctors like me to give back to the communities that need us most.

Partnering with VSP Eyes of Hope was a full-circle moment. I spent the day providing eye care to elementary school children who had limited access to vision services. Many of them had never had an eye exam before, and some left with their very first pair of glasses. It was a day filled with gratitude, compassion, and perspective. As a doctor who shares so much of her journey online, I knew I wanted my content to reflect what it truly means to serve—and this experience reminded me that our impact goes far beyond prescriptions and refractions.

To any OD considering volunteering: DO IT. Whether you’re new to the profession or decades in, you’ll walk away with something more valuable than CE credits—purpose. As Eye See It, this is the type of work that reconnects you with your “why” and reminds you why our role in community health is so critical.

As someone who believes in showing the real side of this profession—especially through the lens of being a Black millennial woman—I believe in using my platform to inspire others to lead with purpose. Social media can glamorize our profession, but there’s nothing more powerful than sharing what it looks like to truly make an impact. Let’s keep showing up in service, in style, and in strength.
